چکیده

We present medium-resolution spectra of 16 radial velocity red-giant members of the low-luminosity Boötes I dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy that have sufficient S/N for abundance determination, based on the strength of the Ca II K line. Assuming [Ca/Fe] ∼ 0.3, the abundance range in the sample is ∆[Fe/H] ∼ 1.7 dex, with one star having [Fe/H = –3.4. The dispersion is σ([Fe/H]) = 0.45 ± 0.08 – similar to those of the Galaxy’s more luminous dSph systems and ω Centauri. This suggests that the large mass (& 10 M⊙) normally assumed to foster self-enrichment and the production of chemical abundance spreads was provided by the non-baryonic material in Boötes I. Absence of H I in the Boötes Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

Neutral hydrogen (H i) observations towards the Boötes dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy (hereafter Boötes), a very low luminosity metal-poor Galactic satellite, were obtained using the Parkes Radio Telescope. We do not detect any H i in or around Boötes to a 3σ upper limit of 180 M⊙ within the optical half light radius and 8000 M⊙ within 1.6 kpc. Its H i mass-to-light ratio is less than 0.002 M⊙/...

The Chemical Evolution of the Boötes I Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy

We present chemical abundance measurements of two metal-poor red giant stars in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Boötes I, based on Magellan/MIKE high-resolution spectra. For Boo-980, with [ ] = Fe H 3.1 / , we present the first elemental abundance measurements, while Boo-127, with [ ] = Fe H 2.0 / , shows abundances in good agreement with previous measurements. Light and iron-peak element abundanc...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

A Spectroscopic Confirmation of the Boötes Ii Dwarf Spheroidal

We present a new suite of photometric and spectroscopic data for the faint Boötes II dwarf spheroidal galaxy candidate. Our deep photometry, obtained with the INT/WFC, suggests a distance of 46 kpc and a small half-light radius of 4.0 (56 pc), consistent with previous estimates. Follow-up spectroscopy obtained with the Gemini/GMOS instrument yielded radial velocities and metallicities. While th...

2MASS observations of spectroscopically identified extragalactic C stars

We matched spectroscopically identified C stars (from low resolution objective prism surveys) in the Magellanic Clouds with 2MASS sources. We confirm that C stars show a large spread in absolute magnitudes, even in the Ks band. We show that the I and Ks magnitude distributions of a population of C stars (in the LMC) have a similar narrow dispersion if the C stars are selected in a well defined ...
